RVA <3's Upcycling

Hi there Pinterest perusers, Etsy enthusiasts, and Craigslist crawlers. Or maybe you’re a blog hopper, furniture fixer-upper, whomever. Something brought you here, maybe you’re my Mom. Whatever you are, we just want to say, welcome to the site.

Who are we? We could give ourselves a cool name, something to make a business card a little spicier, something like Object Recreation Specialists, or Antique Artistes. But really, we’re just two people living in RVA who like to make things pretty.

On the site you’ll find our latest projects, how-to’s, how-to-not’s, furniture finds, stuff we found in the neighbor’s alley, colors, mood boards, stuff we wish we had, creepy craigslist ads, and hopefully somewhere in there you get inspired to do something creative. RVA is a pretty kick-ass creative place, where people specialize in taking something boring and creating something mind-blowingly cool.

In the spirit of our chosen name we have decided to make a list of our

TOP 3 RVA “UPCYCLES”

Canal Walk

We don’t have a before and after here, because before the city commissioned street artists to create works of art along the Canal Walk, who would’ve taken a picture of a blank concrete wall?

Pocket Park (Scuffletown)

Some of you might be familiar with the term “pocket park.” It’s where odd, irregular pieces of land that are created by the city streets and houses -- maybe medians or back alleys -- are turned into an oasis for city residents. All of these mini parks are in and of themselves an “upcycle” but our favorite has to be Scuffletown, a pocket park one can only find through whispers of it’s hidden location…

Pipeline

Whoever thought to turn an eyesore such as a large concrete pipe running along the river, into a hidden walking pathway deserves an award. Maybe it was never even planned, maybe Richmonders themselves took the initiative to celebrate something that literally transports shit as a scenic pathway instead. That, friends, has got to be the definition of Upcycle.

Our own upcycles are soon to come with some gnarly before/after action. Thanks for reading our first post. We hope you stay tuned…
