A Field Guide To Alley Hunting

I love taking something that someone has discarded and transforming it into something that people will want and will help make their homes more beautiful and complete. While alley's are generally reserved for garbage, often times it's where we find gems. So here is a little field guide for alley hunting and curb alerts.

1. Have a vision

One of the more important parts of the upcycle/restoration process is seeing what your piece could become. Looking past the chipped wood from that one time someone's toddler got ahold of the screwdriver or the literally crappy brown paint job. Have a vision, do a little research, and bring it to life.

2. Be able to say no

Some things are better left in the alley. If you don't love it, leave it. This is where a partner in crime comes in handy. (See #7)

3. Be able to transport it

The other day Emma and I had an interesting time trying to load what must have been the world's heaviest table into the back of her Corolla. This table is not THAT big, but it has the density of a dying sun... we just couldn't say no to it though.

4. Know your city, know your neighborhoods

Richmond, Virginia is an awesome city with incredible neighborhoods, each with it's own unique feel. It's important to know where you're roaming not just because you'll know where all the good stuff is, but for safety purposes as well. Which leads us to #5 on our list.

5. Make sure you're not stealing

Seriously, just because it's in the alley or on the curb does not mean it's free. You don't want to get chased down an alley while trying to carry a table. (Why would I put it down? Might as well try to make off with it)

6. Craigslist can be a gold mine

Not just for incredibly creepy classifieds that make your skin crawl, but for some really cool free stuff.

What to look for!

What not to look for...

7. Teamwork makes the dream work

The most important thing to have is a teammate. Someone that's ride or die, that can tell you NO when you need it, act as a second set of eyes, and just overall kick ass.

Good luck on your alley and curb alert adventures!
